The Dutch Nursery Serving gardeners since 1957
History

Our History The Dutch Nursery was founded by Hans Paul Wilhelm Henn, who arrived from his native Germany in 1954. He originally worked for the Cheshunt based company, Rochfords, in their nursery division. Here, he was introduced to a Dutch girl, called Anna, who had recently arrived in the UK to improve her English.

Together they started a nursery of their own selling Dutch bulbs and container grown plants - at the time revolutionary as most plants were sold bare rooted. Following the appalling winter of 1963 they left their rented lot adjacent to the ‘Cock of the North ‘ pub and moved to the present site, which was previously a cucumber nursery. So in 1964 they started demolishing and rebuilding the nursery into the early form of what you see today. In the ensuing eight years five sons and a daughter were produced who have all worked at some time or other in the 1980/90’s for the family company. More recently the children have diversified.

The Family

Hans and Anna Henn are taking a more backseat role these days but are always on hand to give expert advice to any of their children and customers (many of whom have been visiting the Dutch Nursery since the early days). Whilst the family business has spread its wings each part remains focused on the family policy of quality products and customer care.
